Lesson Plan: Vertical Addition Mathematics • 1st Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve addition problems presented vertically with sums up to 10.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- model vertical addition calculations involving numbers up to 10,
- solve addition problems presented vertically,
- understand that addition number sentences can be presented horizontally or vertically,
- solve simple addition word problems using vertical addition and models.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- solving horizontal equations,
- reading and writing horizontal equations.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- adding numbers over 10,
- adding using number lines.
