Lesson Plan: Factoring Algebraic Expressions Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to write algebraic expressions as a product of irreducible factors.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- find the greatest common factor of an expression and factor it outside the parentheses,
- factor quadratic expressions,
- factor the difference of two squares,
- factor cubic expressions with a common factor ,
- factor polynomial expressions that can be converted into quadratic expressions using a substitution of the form .
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- algebraic expressions,
- polynomials and monomials,
- rules of exponents,
- multiplying polynomials by expanding the parentheses.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- factoring polynomial expressions that cannot be reduced to quadratics,
- factoring by grouping,
- completing the square.
