Lesson Plan: Circles

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to draw circles with a compass, locate the center of a circle, and define and measure a circle’s radius, diameter, and chords.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify the center of a circle,
  • identify whether a point is on the inside or the outside of a circle,
  • draw a circle accurately given its radius or diameter,
  • identify a circle’s radius, diameter, and chords,
  • classify a line within a circle as a radius, a diameter, or a chord,
  • solve problems involving the diameter or radius of a circle.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the concept of circles as two-dimensional shapes that are perfectly round,
  • how to identify and measure line segments.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • circumferences of circles,
  • areas of circles,
  • interior angles of circles.
