Lesson Plan: Further Tests for Anions Chemistry

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify a selection of aqueous negative ions based on their reactivity and the color and solubility of their salts.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the test and results for the bicarbonate anion,
  • describe the test and results for the sulfide anion,
  • describe the test and results for the thiosulfate anion,
  • describe the test and results for the nitrite anion,
  • describe the test and results for the phosphate anion,
  • write ionic equations for the tests for bicarbonate, sulfide, thiosulfate, nitrite, and phosphate anions,
  • identify the anion in an unknown solution using the tests above.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • anions,
  • precipitates.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • tests for cations,
  • tests for any other anions except those listed above.
