Lesson Plan: Transistors Physics • Third Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe how transistors can be used as electrical switches in circuits.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe how the base, collector, and emitter terminals of PNP or NPN transistors relate to the semiconductor doping at these terminals,
  • describe how the currents at the terminals of a transistor vary with the bias applied to the transistor junctions by an external circuit,
  • manipulate the following equations in different combinations to calculate 𝐼, 𝐼, and 𝐼: 𝐼=𝛼𝐼, 𝐼=(1𝛼)𝐼, and 𝛽=𝐼𝐼,
  • use 𝑉=𝑉+𝐼𝑅 in different combinations and describe how each term affects the others.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • semiconductor junctions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • logic gates.
