Lesson Plan: Measures of Central Tendency
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the measures of central tendency like the mean, median, and mode.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- compute the mean, median, and mode of a given data set,
- identify a missing data value given the mean or median of a given data set,
- understand how adding a new data point affects the mean, median, and mode,
- understand when the mean, the median, or the mode is the best measure of central tendency,
- estimate the mean, median, and mode of a grouped data set.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- populations and samples.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the resistance of a statistic,
- outliers,
- range,
- standard deviation.
