Lesson Plan: Law of Levers Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify the force arm and resistance arm of a lever and investigate, describe, and use the law of levers.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define and identify the resistance arm and force arm of a lever,
  • identify the units of measurement of the resistance arm and force arm,
  • identify the units of the effort force and resistance force,
  • describe and investigate the law of levers using a spring balance,
  • perform calculations using the law of levers.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • forces,
  • the definition of a lever,
  • describing and identifying the weight force, resistance force, and fulcrum in a lever,
  • multiplying and dividing numbers up to two digits long.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the term moments as it relates to forces,
  • mechanical advantage.
