Lesson Plan: Maps: Comparing maps and Globes
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to locate the equator, the poles, and the hemispheres on a map and globe and compare the characteristics of maps and globes.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the equator, the poles, and the Northern and Southern Hemispheres,
- define globe,
- identify bodies of land and water on a globe,
- locate the equator and the poles on a map and globe,
- identify the Northern and Southern Hemispheres on a map and a globe,
- compare and contrast the characteristics of maps and globes.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the four cardinal directions: north, east, south and west,
- the shapes rectangle and sphere,
- how to use the key and the compass rose on a map.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the locations of continents or different habitats,
- physical features other than bodies of land and water.
