Lesson Plan: Function Transformations: Reflection Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to reflect a graph on the 𝑥- or 𝑦-axis, both graphically and algebraically.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify the graph of a given graph when reflected in the 𝑥- or 𝑦-axis,
  • sketch the graph of a given graph when reflected in the 𝑥- or 𝑦-axis,
  • understand that 𝑦=𝑓(𝑥) corresponds to a reflection of 𝑦=𝑓(𝑥) in the 𝑦-axis,
  • understand that 𝑦=𝑓(𝑥) corresponds to a reflection of 𝑦=𝑓(𝑥) in the 𝑥-axis,
  • understand how to combine a reflection in the 𝑥- and 𝑦-axes both algebraically and graphically,
  • identify the graph of a given function when reflected in the 𝑥- or 𝑦-axis.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • graphing functions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • rotations,
  • translations,
  • reflections in an arbitrary line,
  • reflections represented as matrices.
