Lesson Plan: Graphs of Simple Cubic Functions

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to graph and interpret cubic functions of the form 𝑦 = 𝑘𝑥³ + 𝑐.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • graph cubic functions of the form 𝑦=𝑘𝑥+𝑐,
  • observe that the graph 𝑦=𝑘𝑥 of is compressed when |𝑘|>1, stretched when |𝑘|<1, and reflected in the 𝑥-axis when 𝑘<0,
  • observe that the constant term 𝑐 translates the graph by the vector 0,𝑐 (i.e., 𝑐 units vertically),
  • identify the correct graph of a given function of the form 𝑦=𝑘𝑥+𝑐.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • graphing quadratic functions.
