Lesson Plan: Using Magnets in Everyday Life
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify and describe everyday uses of magnets and describe what electromagnets are.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand that magnets are present in many of the devices that we use,
- describe how magnetism is used in given examples of devices,
- suggest how magnetism can be used to solve problems,
- describe what an electromagnet is,
- identify the components of an electromagnet,
- compare electromagnets to natural and permanent magnets,
- describe how electromagnets can be made stronger,
- describe how compasses use Earth’s magnetism.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- what a magnet is,
- the magnetic materials iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- details of how electrical circuits work.
