Lesson Plan: Rate of Change and Derivatives Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the instantaneous rate of change for a function using derivatives and apply this in real-world problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that the derivative 𝑓(𝑥) is a function which describes the instantaneous rate of change of the function 𝑓(𝑥),
  • use differentiation to find 𝑓(𝑥) in the context of finding the rate of change of 𝑓(𝑥),
  • evaluate the rate of change of 𝑓(𝑥) at the point where 𝑥=𝑎 by using differentiation and evaluating 𝑓(𝑎).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the definition of the derivative,
  • rules of differentiation (power, product, and quotient chain),
  • differentiation of real functions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • using the limit definition of the derivative,
  • related rates problems.
