Lesson Plan: Kinetic Friction Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to analyze the forces acting on objects on frictional surfaces when they move along these surfaces.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the coefficient of kinetic friction, 𝜇, using 𝜇=𝐹𝑚𝑔𝜃cos, where 𝐹 is an applied force parallel to a frictional surface that makes an angle 𝜃 with the horizontal,
  • understand how to determine the kinetic friction force on a moving object,
  • calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction between two surfaces.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • static friction.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • rotation of objects,
  • shear stress.
