Lesson Plan: Converting Length: Inches, Feet, and Yards

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to convert between whole numbers of inches, feet, and yards.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that there are 12 inches in 1 foot, 3 feet in one yard, and 36 inches in 1 yard,
  • use models to understand units of conversion,
  • use multiplication to convert larger units of measure to smaller units of measure,
  • use division to convert smaller units of measure to larger units of measure,
  • solve simple word problems involving converting units of length.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • multiplying up to 4 digits by 1 digit,
  • multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits,
  • dividing 4 digits by 1 digit.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • converting lengths involving miles.
