Lesson Plan: The Heart: Blood Flow

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the flow of blood around the body.


Students will be able to

  • describe the path blood takes as it flows between the heart, the lungs, and the rest of the body,
  • explain when blood is oxygen filled and when it is oxygen depleted,
  • define veins and arteries,
  • compare the roles of veins and arteries.


Students should already be familiar with

  • the role of the heart,
  • the role of blood in transporting oxygen and nutrients,
  • the location of the heart,
  • the idea that the heart is a muscle that beats automatically.


Students will not cover

  • the terms circulation or circulatory system,
  • the structure of the heart,
  • the composition of blood,
  • the names of specific veins and arteries,
  • the details of gas exchange in the lungs,
  • heart rate.
