Lesson Plan: Multiplying Proper Fractions
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the product of an integer and a proper fraction and the product of two proper fractions by multiplying the numerators and the denominators and then writing the answer in its simplest form.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- multiply an integer and a proper fraction, giving the answer as a fraction in its simplest form,
- multiply two proper fractions together by multiplying the numerators and denominators, giving the answer as a fraction in its simplest form,
- solve word problems involving the multiplication of an integer and a proper fraction or two proper fractions.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- multiplication facts of ,
- multiplying fractions using area models,
- simplifying fractions,
- writing an improper fraction as a mixed number.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying fractions greater than 1 or multiplications involving mixed numbers.
