# Lesson Plan: Equivalent Fractions Using Models Mathematics • 3rd Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use models to determine whether two fractions are equivalent.

#### Objectives

Students will be able to

• identify equivalent fractions using models,
• use fraction strips to determine whether two fractions are equivalent when one of them is a unit fraction,
• use fraction strips to determine whether two fractions are equivalent,
• use fraction models to determine whether two fractions are equivalent when one of them is a unit fraction,
• use fraction models to determine whether two fractions are equivalent.

#### Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

• how to read and write fractions in word form,
• how to read and write fractions using numbers,
• unit and nonunit fractions,
• how to use models to find fractions that are equivalent to one-half.

#### Exclusions

Students will not cover

• denominators greater than 12,
• comparing or ordering fractions,
• modeling with number lines.
