Lesson Plan: Adding and Subtracting Rational Functions Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to add and subtract rational functions, identify the domains of the resulting functions, and simplify them.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- find a common denominator for two rational functions,
- add rational functions to one another and identify the domain of the resulting function,
- subtract rational functions from one another and identify the domain of the resulting function.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- function notation,
- factoring quadratic expressions,
- multiplying binomials,
- finding the domain and range of rational functions,
- finding the common denominator of rational numbers,
- zeros of polynomial functions,
- simplifying rational functions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying and dividing rational functions.
