Lesson Plan: The Earth’s Freshwater
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the distribution of water on Earth, identify the types of freshwater on Earth, and explore the different sources of usable freshwater.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the distribution of saltwater and freshwater on Earth,
- explain the difference between saltwater and freshwater,
- identify the forms of freshwater on Earth and their relative distribution,
- define usable freshwater,
- explore sources of usable freshwater,
- describe the types of freshwater sources: groundwater, running water, and standing water,
- explain what aquifers and reservoirs are.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the states of matter as they relate to water,
- different types of water features such as lakes, streams, ponds, swamps, and oceans.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the water cycle,
- specific uses of water.
