Lesson Plan: Surface Areas of Rectangular Prism and Cubes

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate surface areas of cubes and rectangular prisms and use this to solve real-life problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the difference between a cube and a rectangular prism,
  • understand that surface area is the sum of the areas of the faces of a three-dimensional object,
  • calculate the surface area of a cube,
  • calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism,
  • solve word problems on the surface area of cubes and rectangular prisms,
  • find the edge length of a cube or a rectangular prism given its total surface area and base dimensions.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • three-dimensional objects, particularly cubes and prisms,
  • how to calculate the area of a square and a rectangle.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • volume of a rectangular prism or cube,
  • surface areas of three-dimensional objects other than rectangular prisms and cubes.
