Lesson Plan: Applications of Genetic Engineering Biology

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to describe some applications of genetic engineering and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these applications.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall examples of how recombinant DNA and genetic engineering can be used, including producing insulin, treating diseases, and genetically modifying crops,
  • state the benefits of genetically engineering organisms,
  • outline some ethical and scientific objections to genetic engineering.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the process of forming recombinant DNA.
