Lesson Plan: Counting Money: Pounds and Pence Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the value of a group of coins and notes by counting pounds and pence separately within 100.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- find the values of groups of coins and notes in pounds and pence,
- count in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s to find the total number of pence,
- count in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s to find the total number of pounds,
- write the total amount of pounds and pence using the correct symbols,
- make given amounts of money in pounds and pence.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- recognizing coins and notes used in the UK,
- identifying the value of each coin and note,
- using a number line to count in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s to find a total amount.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- decimal notation for money,
- counting amounts exceeding 100.
