Lesson Plan: Word Problems: Addition and Subtraction with Numbers up to 1,000 Mathematics • 2nd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve one- and two-step word problems where the steps involve adding and/or subtracting numbers up to 1,000.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- identify whether a word problem can be solved using addition or subtraction,
- write equations to represent word problems,
- solve one- and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction,
- use addition or subtraction to check the answer to a word problem.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- adding and subtracting two-digit numbers,
- using models to represent word problems,
- the fact that addition and subtraction are inverse operations.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- using fractions or decimals,
- solving problems with more than two steps,
- working with variables.
