This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve one- and two-step word problems where the steps involve adding and/or subtracting numbers up to 1,000.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify whether a word problem can be solved using addition or subtraction,
  • write equations to represent word problems,
  • solve one- and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction,
  • use addition or subtraction to check the answer to a word problem.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding and subtracting two-digit numbers,
  • using models to represent word problems,
  • the fact that addition and subtraction are inverse operations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • using fractions or decimals,
  • solving problems with more than two steps,
  • working with variables.
