Lesson Plan: Past Habits

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use “used to + infinitive” and “would + infinitive” to talk about past habits.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use “used to + infinitive” in the affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms to talk about habits and situations in the past and to compare the past to the future,
  • use “would + infinitive” in the affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms to talk about past habits,
  • understand that “would + infinitive” cannot be used to talk about situations in the past,
  • use the passive voice with used to and would to talk about past habits by using “be + past participle.”

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the past simple,
  • the past simple passive,
  • the adverbs never and always.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • continuous forms with used to and would.
