Lesson Plan: Understanding Functions Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define and evaluate functions and find the roots and the maximum or minimum of quadratic functions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand how a function is defined as well as what the domain, range, and roots of a function are,
  • evaluate functions using substitution,
  • find the roots of linear and quadratic (or quadratic-like) functions by solving them,
  • find the input values for which two polynomial functions are equal,
  • identify the minimum or maximum value of a quadratic function by finding its vertex form.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • solving linear and quadratic equations,
  • completing the square.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • graphs of functions,
  • using the discriminant,
  • nonpolynomial or nonradical functions.
