Lesson Plan: Volumes of Rectangular Prisms and Cubes

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate volumes of cubes and rectangular prisms given their dimensions and solve problems including real-life situations.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify that a cube is a rectangular prism with equal dimensions,
  • find the volume of a cube,
  • find the volume of a rectangular prism,
  • solve word problems on the volumes of cubes and rectangular prisms,
  • find the edge length of a cube given its volume.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • multiplying three numbers,
  • area and perimeter of rectangles.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • volumes of three-dimensional objects other than cubes and rectangular prisms,
  • surface area of cubes and rectangular prisms.
