Lesson Plan: Reversible and Nonreversible Changes

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to compare reversible and nonreversible changes, giving examples and explaining the causes of these changes.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • compare a reversible change to one that is nonreversible,
  • explain that heating and cooling can change the properties of a material to create something new that cannot be changed back,
  • describe examples of heating and cooling causing changes that cannot be reversed.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • states of matter,
  • changing states by heating and cooling,
  • examples of water as a solid, liquid, and gas.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the terms condensation or evaporation (however, they will refer to steam/water vapor),
  • properties of solids, liquids, and gases,
  • any part of the water cycle,
