Lesson Plan: Multiplying by 9 Mathematics • 3rd Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use skip counting and known multiplication facts to multiply by 9.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • skip count in 9s up to 10×9,
  • draw models to represent and solve multiplication sentences,
  • use known multiplication facts to find multiples of 9,
  • find missing products and factors in multiplication sentences,
  • identify and apply patterns and strategies when multiplying by 9.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the relationship between multiplication and repeated addition,
  • modeling multiplication with arrays and equal group models,
  • multiplying by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • solving word problems,
  • multiples of 9 greater than 90.
