This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the process of semiconservative DNA replication, including the role of different enzymes, and recall how errors made during DNA replication can be corrected.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall the basic structure of DNA, including the complementary base pairings,
  • describe the process of semiconservative DNA replication,
  • explain the role of DNA helicase, DNA polymerase, and DNA ligase in semiconservative DNA replication,
  • describe how errors introduced in DNA replication can be corrected.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • DNA being the genetic material of a eukaryotic cell,
  • the basic structure of DNA,
  • the offspring’s DNA being inherited from the parent.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • transcription/translation.
