Lesson Plan: Multistep Problems with Fractions

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the properties of the four operations and the order of operations to solve problems with fractions and mixed numbers.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use bar models to solve multistep problems involving fractions,
  • write equations to solve multistep word problems involving fractions,
  • evaluate numerical expressions containing two or three operations using the order of operations,
  • apply the associative and commutative properties to solve problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers,
  • multiplying fractions,
  • dividing fractions by whole numbers,
  • the order of operations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • solving problems that include powers,
  • solving algebraic equations.
