Lesson Plan: Differentiating and Integrating Power Series Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to differentiate and integrate a power series using term-by-term differentiation and integration and use the results to find power series representations of some functions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • differentiate and integrate power series,
  • understand how differentiation and integration affect the radius and interval of convergence of a power series,
  • use differentiation and integration to find power series representations of some functions such as arctan(𝑥) and 1(𝑥2).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the definition of a power series,
  • the radius of convergence of a power series,
  • differentiation and integration.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • Taylor polynomials.
