Lesson Plan: Adaptation: Animals Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe ways in which animals are adapted to their habitats and describe an experiment to investigate how blubber helps animals survive in the cold.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe ways in which animals are adapted to their habitats,
  • describe blubber and explain how blubber helps animals survive in the cold,
  • define the term insulator,
  • describe an experiment to investigate how blubber helps animals survive in the cold,
  • describe how a camel’s hump helps it survive.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • what traits are,
  • what habitats are (e.g., grassland, wetland, rain forest, desert, river, lake, meadow, woodland, and pond),
  • what an adaptation is,
  • how plants adapt to their environment.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • how camouflage aids animals in survival in detail,
  • evolution by natural selection.
