Lesson Plan: Transformations of the Complex Plane Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to translate and rotate a complex number in the complex plane.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe translations of the complex plane algebraically, given a geometric description, and vice versa,
- describe dilations of the complex plane algebraically, given a geometric description, and vice versa,
- describe rotations of the complex plane algebraically, given a geometric description, and vice versa,
- identify the images of the subsets of the complex plane under translations, dilations, and rotations,
- work with transformations of the complex plane in polar and Cartesian forms.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- complex numbers and polar and Cartesian forms,
- the complex plane,
- linear transformations,
- vectors.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- Möbius transformations.
