Lesson Plan: Estimating Products: Multiplying by One-Digit Numbers Mathematics • 4th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to estimate the products of one-digit numbers and two- or three-digit numbers by rounding to the nearest ten or hundred.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- estimate the product of a one-digit and a two-digit number by rounding the two-digit number to the nearest 10,
- estimate the product of a one-digit and a three-digit number by rounding the three-digit number to the nearest 100,
- use estimation to identify if an answer is reasonable,
- use estimation to find two numbers a product is between.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying two- and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number.
