Lesson Plan: Sound beyond the Range of Human Hearing Science
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to distinguish between properties, sources, and important examples of ultrasonic waves and infrasonic waves.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall that infrasonic waves are waves with frequencies less than 20 Hz,
- recall that ultrasonic waves are waves with frequencies greater than 20 kHz,
- recognize some sources of infrasonic waves and ultrasonic waves,
- identify some applications of ultrasonic waves.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the fact that the range of human hearing is between 20 Hz and 20 kHz.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- details of seismic waves,
- descriptions of how ultrasound imaging works,
- piezoelectricity.
