Lesson Plan: Science Inquiry Skills
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to develop the skills we need to carry out a scientific inquiry.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- make observations and ask questions,
- design experiments to test observations and ask questions,
- make predictions about the results of experiments,
- understand the importance of taking accurate measurements,
- analyze and evaluate results and use them to ask and answer questions,
- determine if an investigation is a fair test.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- basic units of time and basic metric units of length, distance, and mass,
- reading and recording temperature in degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit,
- understanding and identifying the parts of simple graphs and tables.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- problem-solving methods other than scientific inquiry, such as the engineering design process.
