Lesson Plan: Systems of Classification Biology
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the classification systems proposed by Linnaeus and Whittaker and recall organisms that are difficult to classify.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the classification system of the two kingdoms established by Carl Linnaeus,
- describe the classification system of the five kingdoms established by Robert Whittaker,
- recall that there are some organisms (e.g., viruses, viroids, and prions) that are difficult to classify.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the concept that organisms that are more similar are classified together.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the 6 kingdoms,
- the 3 domains.
