Lesson Plan: Adding Fractions with Like Denominators Mathematics • 4th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use models, such as tape diagrams and number lines, to add two fractions with the same denominator and write the result as a mixed number.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • model the addition of two fractions with a bar model,
  • model the addition of two fractions on a number line,
  • understand that adding the numerators tells us the number of parts in the sum,
  • write the sum as a mixed number,
  • add more than two fractions.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding fractions within one whole,
  • writing fractions equivalent to whole numbers,
  • converting improper fractions into mixed numbers,
  • converting mixed numbers into improper fractions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • adding mixed numbers,
  • simplifying fractions.
