Lesson Plan: Unit Prefixes
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify unit prefixes and convert between units that have different unit prefixes.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use the unit prefixes kilo-, mega-, and giga-,
- use the unit prefixes milli-, micro-, and nano-.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- multiplying and dividing numbers by a thousand, a million, and a billion,
- reading numbers with up to nine digits,
- the names for numbers up to a billion,
- some simple physical units such as the meter, joule, watt, and volt but not necessarily the physical meaning to the units.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- any other unit prefixes,
- any non-SI units,
- conversions of numbers with more than two significant figures,
- conversions of numbers written in standard form.
