Lesson Plan: Interference of Light Waves Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define wave interference and describe the constructive and destructive interference of waves that are mutually in or out of phase.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the resultant displacement of a point where two wave pulses overlap,
  • describe the resultants of pairs of wave pulses as they overlap,
  • define phase difference between pairs of waves from the relative positions of the maximum positive and negative displacements of the waves,
  • recognize constructive interference as completely in phase pairs of waves,
  • recognize destructive interference as completely out of phase pairs of waves.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • wavelength,
  • amplitude,
  • displacement,
  • 𝑐=𝑓𝜆.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • sine and cosine,
  • diffraction.
