Lesson Plan: Modern Advances in Medicine
This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to discuss the risks and benefits of modern advances in medicine such as stem cells, gene technology, and the Human Genome Project.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the disadvantages of human transplants,
- describe the benefits and risks associated with stem cells, including the potential of stem cells in tissue transplantation,
- discuss the benefits and risks of gene technology in medicine,
- discuss how understanding the human genome may benefit medicine.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- immune system and immune responses against nonself cells,
- the process of drug discovery and development,
- the fact that stem cells are undifferentiated cells,
- genes and DNA organization, genetic diseases, and the principles of genetic engineering (GMO).
