Lesson Plan: Adding and Subtracting Odd and Even Numbers
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine which combinations of even and odd numbers will result in an even sum and which will result in an odd sum and solve problems relating to addition and subtraction with odd and even numbers.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- determine whether adding or subtracting two even numbers gives a result that is odd or even,
- determine whether adding or subtracting two odd numbers gives a result that is odd or even,
- determine whether adding or subtracting an even number and an odd number gives a result that is odd or even,
- solve problems relating to addition and subtraction with odd and even numbers,
- make and complete true statements about even and odd numbers and addition and subtraction.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- how to determine which numbers are even and which numbers are odd,
- basic addition and subtraction strategies and facts.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying or dividing odd and even numbers,
- numbers greater than 100.
