Lesson Plan: Start Times to the Nearest Five Minutes Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the end time of an event and its duration to calculate the start time, when all times are to the nearest five minutes.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- calculate the start time where the end time is shown on an analog clock,
- calculate the start time where the end time is written digitally,
- use number lines and skip counting backward around clock faces to work out start times,
- solve problems where end times and durations are given and it is necessary to calculate the start time.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- reading analog and digital times to the nearest five minutes,
- calculating the duration of an event.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- converting units of time,
- am and pm,
- 24-hour times.
