Lesson Plan: Place Value Relationships Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recognize when digits get 10, 100, 1,000, and so on times bigger or smaller as they move left or right up to 9 digits.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that the value of a digit increases 10 times with each move to the left in a whole number,
  • describe patterns with changing place values,
  • investigate the relationships between place values.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the place values of numbers up to 1,000,000,000.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • place value relationships of numbers with more than 9 digits.
