Lesson Plan: Motion

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use speed, velocity, and acceleration to describe motion.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify that forces can lead to a change in motion,
  • define velocity and acceleration,
  • explain the difference between speed and velocity,
  • identify the units of speed and velocity as metres per second (m/s), kilometres per hour (km/h), and miles per hour (mph),
  • perform calculations involving speed and velocity,
  • describe how the acceleration of an object depends on the size of the force acting on it,
  • describe how the acceleration of an object depends on the weight of the object,
  • interpret force diagrams using arrows to represent acceleration and velocity.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the idea that a force is a push or a pull,
  • the definition of motion,
  • the definition of speed,
  • multiplying and dividing whole numbers within the multiplication tables up to 10×10.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • calculations involving acceleration,
  • units of acceleration,
  • equations relating force and acceleration.
