Lesson Plan: Adding Three or More Numbers Mathematics • 3rd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use column addition and other methods to add three or four 2- or 3-digit numbers.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use models to add three or four numbers,
- use the formal algorithm to add three or four numbers,
- add numbers in any order, choosing which numbers to add first.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- adding two 2- or 3-digit numbers,
- column addition including regrouping.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- adding 4-digit numbers,
- sums of 1,000 or greater,
- adding more than four numbers.
