Lesson Plan: Order of Operations: Negative Numbers Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to evaluate numerical expressions involving negative numbers using the order of operations.


Students will be able to

  • understand how the order of operations applies to expressions that contain negative numbers,
  • evaluate numerical expressions that contain negative numbers in cases where the order of operations is important,
  • formulate equivalent numerical expressions, which contain negative numbers, from a given word problem.


Students should already be familiar with

  • the order of operations.


Students will not cover

  • expressions that contain exponents,
  • decimals.
