Lesson Plan: Remainder and Factor Theorem with Synthetic Division

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify factors and zeros and find the remainder of a polynomial function using the remainder and factor theorems with synthetic division.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • evaluate a polynomial using the remainder after synthetic division,
  • understand the factor theorem and how to use it to find the factors of a polynomial,
  • determine whether a given binomial is a factor of a given polynomial using the factor theorem,
  • use the factor theorem and synthetic division to fully factor a polynomial,
  • use the factor theorem to find all of the roots of a polynomial.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • synthetic division,
  • operations on polynomials.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • graphing polynomials.
