Lesson Plan: Modern Atomic Theory Chemistry

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the concepts of modern atomic theory.

Students will be able to

  • describe the limitations of the Bohr model of the atom,
  • state the wave–particle duality of the electron,
  • describe in qualitative terms the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in relation to position and velocity,
  • describe in qualitative terms the wave mechanical description of an atom,
  • explain how the location of an electron within a certain volume of an atom is defined by probability.

Students should already be familiar with

  • the atomic model,
  • the structure of the atom,
  • the atomic nucleus.

Students will not cover

  • quantum mechanical descriptions of atomic theory,
  • any equations and quantitative descriptions of atomic theory,
  • atomic orbitals.
