Lesson Plan: Factoring Using the Highest Common Factor Mathematics • First Year of Preparatory School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to factor algebraic expressions by identifying the highest common factor (HCF).
Objectives
Students will be able to
- factor a polynomial expression where the HCF is a monomial
- and the polynomial is a single variable,
- and the polynomial is multivariable,
- factor a polynomial expression where the HCF is a binomial that has already been factored in the individual terms
- and the polynomial is single variable,
- and the polynomial is multivariable,
- solve real-world problems using the highest common factor (HCF) factorization.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the definition of the highest common factor,
- the distributive property of multiplication,
- dividing polynomials (or a monomial) by a monomial,
- addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- factoring completely unfactored polynomials where the factors are binomials or higher, including a difference of two squares:
- ,
- ,
- polynomial long division,
- the quadratic formula.
